Decorating with the Cooler Temps in Mind

Decorating with the Cooler Temps in MindThe cooler weather is finally upon us!  For many, it’s a welcomed relief and we want to embrace all the cozy things. While we may not experience the change of seasons, we can create a “warm” space that’ll give us a “cozy feeling”. Here’s a few tips to help you get started in creating a welcoming “cool weather” space.

Let’s start by adding DRAPES – you’ll improve your warm, cozy aesthetic by hanging drapes.  When drapes are closed, they’ll improve the energy efficiency in your home by keeping the warm air in and providing an extra barrier against cold window drafts.  They can be placed over your existing blinds. You can change the drapes out for light and airy curtains in the spring and summer months for a different vibe.    TIP: Hang the rod a minimum of 10”-12” past the window on each side (if you have the room) and at least 3”-4” below the ceiling or your crown moulding.

The COLOR of your drapes will make an impact in your space.  Moody colors are a big hit right now and selecting colors like Navy Blue, Dark Green, Chocolate and Camel will certainly add warmth to your space. You can also choose to match your walls or go for a contrasting color. Velvet is a great fabric choice and will add to the cool, wintery feel regardless of color.

Add cozy TEXTILES – changing out your throw pillows, blankets and lamp shades will help you create a warmer feel.  You can use textured pillow covers such as fur, flannel or tartan plaid.  Faux fur or chunky cable knit throws on your sofa or favorite chair creates a great cozy and inviting look.  Select a warm fabric or even a darker colored lampshade for added warmth to your space.  TIP:  Use one lampshade style per room.

Most of us spend time on our lanai or dine al fresco in the cooler months, so don’t forget to add your cozy textiles outside, too. Adding throw blankets and pillows to your patio furniture lends itself to a cozy evening ahead.

Speaking of OUTDOORS – you can fill your planters with cool weather florals such as asters, dahlias or pansies. Nothing cozier than a chunky blanket, blooming flowers and a candle on a chilly night.  Yes, please!  TIP: If it’s breezy consider using a battery-operated candle instead of a real flame.

CANDLES – add soft ambience to any space.  You can purchase candles that match the color scheme of your space and if you’re into scents there’s many fall inspired aromas such as Teakwood, Fir, Cinnamon Apple, Pumpkin Spice and so many more.  The soft glow of a candle will provide the perfect amount of light for a cozy evening.  TIP:  Using an unscented candle at the dinner table is recommended so it doesn’t compete with the yummy smells of dinner.

TABLESCAPE – pumpkins, gourds, pomegranates and even a rosemary plant can create a beautiful centerpiece that will add beautiful color and texture to your dining table.  TIP:  Keep your tablescapes low so your dinner guests will be able to easily see and converse with one another.
